The distinctive twist of this crescent-shaped jewelry was originally achieved through a painstaking process of hammering gold by hand. This design is typical of the jewelry made by the Fulani, also known as the Peul, who inhabit the Sudan area between Senegal and the Upper Niger in West Africa. Such jewelry is not reserved for special occasions but is worn every day. It is not uncommon to see Fulani women magnificently adorned with jewels and gold ornaments while attending to their domestic tasks.
